X-MEN Producer Teases Plans to Bring Gambit and Deadpool into the Fold

Yesterday, the Gambit movie had a setback when director Rupert Wyatt left the project. But a Gambit film is still probably going to get made and the Deadpool movie starring Ryan Reynolds will hit early next year. So far, the closest that Gambit and Deadpool have come to meeting the other characters in Fox’s live-action franchise was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But there may be more satisfying crossover plans in the future.

While appearing at the Toronto International Film Festival, X-Men producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg explained that the continuity reshuffle of X-Men: Days of Future Past has wiped away some of the events previously depicted in the X-Men films. He hinted that some sort of crossover plans are at least in the early stages of development.

“The idea is that we’ve sort of reset the timeline after Days of Future Past in some ways, and if not erased, certainly allowed for change from X1, 2, 3, everything from Days of Future Past forward, 1973, everything we set now becomes canon,” said Kinberg. “So the Gambit movie, the Deadpool movie, will exist in a world that acknowledges whatever happened in Days of Future Past and moving forward. Doesn’t mean they’ll always interact with those characters, obviously, it’s not like every movie has all the characters, but they all have to exist within the same rules…There will be interplay between different characters in different movies.”

Kinberg added that “we have a clear sense of the directions we want to take them in and in my mind at least, how we could start to cross-pollinate sort of with those characters that have their standalone movies.”

Gambit star Channing Tatum has previously indicated that he will not be making an appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse. But it’s a safe bet that both Gambit and Deadpool will eventually share the screen with the other X-Men characters.
