Breaking Down That X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Trailer

In direct succession of an X-Men film whose memorable highs included a comedy slo-mo bit and a satisfyingly irreverent ending ret-con, X-Men: Apocalypse seems to have realigned its priorities toward the action. The new trailer for Bryan Singer’s forthcoming feature doubles down on the chaos in a major way, suggesting more battles and more destruction. (Sure, the countless missiles launching over contiguous America is chilling, but it’s the library explosion that really gets me. Those poor, glorious books…) And yes, of course these are the things any trailer is bound to focus on, but it sure does seem like Apocalypse has more third-act intensity in its pocket than its relatively easygoing 2014 predecessor.

We get a few fleeting glimpses at some new additions to the film franchise—Olivia Munn shows off some fancy footwork, and a good deal of wistful staring, as Psylock—though no newbie gets more screen time than big bad Oscar Isaac. Granted, he’s wrapped in a hulking sarcophagus and intoning with a built-in Autotune, so it’s not quite the Oscar Isaac we know and love. Still, we can’t exactly cast aspersions on the man who stole the show in the new Star Wars film, the most recent Coen Brothers drama, and one of the best original sci-fi movies of the decade. You’ve got our benefit of the doubt on lock, Apocalypse.

Just as interesting: seeing Days of Future Past breakout character Quicksilver graduate to a more prominent, and more apparently dramatically inclined role. Common complaints about the ’14 flick involved too little screen time for the hyperspeedy breath of fresh air; the Apocalypse trailer has taken note, and gives us almost as much Evan Peters as it does foreboding warfare.

Join Jessica Chobot as she breaks down what’s going down in the new trailer. And with more action, more Quicksilver, and a nearly unrecognizable Oscar Isaac, how does the X-Men: Apocalypse trailer look to you? Let us know in the comments below!
