Wooden Nintendo Cartridges Are Works of Art You Can Actually Play

Are you a blockhead? You will be when you see the nerdiest blocks of wood on the market today. Etsy artist Pigminted, clearly a classy carver, is bringing back your favorite Nintendo games, in wood, with elaborately sculpted designs that feel like they’re the Mondo movie posters of gaming:

If that’s not quite your generation, Pigminted does SNES cartridges like this too.

The style fits the property: Chrono Trigger looks almost like traditional Japanese wood-block art, while Mortal Kombat keeps it simple to emphasize that iconic dragon logo and font.

And then there’s wooden Metroid, which is just a thing of beauty, complete with cracked glass illusion.

$65-$80 is a steal for these beauties as display pieces, but if you want to up the ante and really play with power, you can order them with a Raspberry Pi Zero W inside, loaded with retro pi and all necessary wiring plus one controller, so you can actually play the game. That’ll run closer to $160. Also? Each cartridge is made to order, so if you have a favorite game that isn’t shown, just tell the artist what old game you want to see in wood. The cases are engraved in walnut and cherry, and they come with a hand-carved plywood stand.

Check out Pigminted’s entire Etsy store, which also boasts some stylish Day of the Dead themed wooden Batman playing cards. You might say that quite a niche has been carved out here. What would your dream cartridge be to get etched in timber? Offer suggestions below and let’s discuss!
