WONDER WOMAN’S True Age in BATMAN V SUPERMAN Revealed

With just two months to go until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, all the principal cast members are doing the interview rounds and giving insight into their characters. In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, actress Gal Gadot shed a little light on the backstory of her interpretation of Wonder Woman. She dropped a very interesting detail about her character’s age in the film, sharing that she is actually over 5,000 years old and is a “retired superhero” until the events of the film draw her out of seclusion.

Does Wonder Woman’s advanced age jibe with the comics lore? Truth be told, it’s unclear. The date of Wonder Woman’s birth is never given in the original comics, so it could just as easily been during ancient times as modern, since the Amazons are immortal. More modern versions of the character have explicitly stated that she is young, though– DC Comics’ New 52 Diana is only 23.

If anything, Diana’s advanced age is probably a nod to the classic TV show starring Lynda Carter, where they established that she was actually 2,527 years old at the beginning of the show’s second year, to explain why the character hadn’t aged at all during the 35 year gap between the World War II-set first season and 1970s-set second season.

So why did this new, ancient version of Wonder Woman retire? After all, we know she was actively superhero-ing around the time of World War I (which is when the upcoming Wonder Woman solo movie is set). “Because she’s seen it all, she has seen what humans can do, so it was very hard for her to come back and fight,” Gadot explains, before giving her opinion on what separates Wonder Woman from her civilian identity of Diana Prince. “They have the same attitude. Although when she is Diana she tries to blend in, she is not too outgoing. I don’t want people to think she is perfect. She can be naughty.”

Are you on board for an ancient and wise (and occasionally naughty?) Wonder Woman in the movie universe? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
