What is Written on Wonder Woman’s Shield in BATMAN V SUPERMAN?

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice finally hits theaters this weekend, and while others may be excited to see Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent butt heads, we’re most stoked to see that badass Amazonian finally hit the big screen. Bring on the Wonder Woman! We’ve been analyzing the costumes of all of the future-Justice League members since they premiered at last year’s San Diego Comic Con, and the hyper-specific details that captured our attention most were the strange characters etched into Diana Prince’s shield. So we did what any respectable nerd would do, and asked a Greek scholar to analyze the text and translate the ancient language for us!

Join Jessica Chobot as we analyze the text, the possible translations, and what it could tell us about the origins of the DCEU’s Diana Prince, on today’s Nerdist News!

Thanks for watching today’s show! Check out the latest episode of The Dan Cave, where Dan Casey considers whether or not Superman is a total asshole in BvS. If you liked analyzing this shield, check out our theory on why we think the DCEU versions of Wonder Woman and Aquaman are actually ancient Kryptonian colonists.

Special thanks to Vincent Tommaso for helping us translate the ancient Greek! You can find him over at his website or on Twitter (@rebootthepast). He’s got a ton of great write ups about how ancient Greek has been used in the Wonder Woman comics throughout it’s run and amazing breakdowns of ancient Greek history in pop culture. And you can check out his full write up in the PDF below:

Thank you Vince!!

Let us know in the comments below if you think Wonder Woman is an ancient Kryptonian, Greek, or Themysciran!
