WIN A Copy of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s DON JON

He’s just been announced as the director and star of the upcoming Sandman graphic novel adaptation, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt is no stranger to being in front of AND behind the camera. This year saw the release of the talented multihyphenate’s screenwriting-directing debut, Don Jon, a film that looks at the ridiculousness of love, sex, dating, and the media. Gordon-Levitt’s impressive first feature is on a number of critics’ top tens and has been nominated for Best Screenplay at the Independent Spirit Awards.

The film follows Jon (Gordon-Levitt), an image-conscious porn-watcher from New Jersey who meets a girl (Scarlett Johansson) who’s seen way too many Hollywood romantic comedies. Each of them has a skewed idea of what a relationship would be like, but it’ll take finding common ground for them to truly find intimacy and happiness. The cast also includes Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Glenne Headley, and Brie Larson.

If you’d like to be one of two winners of this acclaimed independent film from one of Hollywood’s smartest people, all you have to do is have a valid email address and tell us in the comments below which Joseph Gordon-Levitt performance is your favorite and why. That’s it! It’s as simple as pie. Give yourself this Christmas present; you’ve earned it. You’ve only got until midnight on Tuesday, December 31st, or your chances will be as gone as 2013. But, look on the bright side, if you miss out, that’s also the day the Don Jon Blu-ray and DVD come out.

I’m a huge fan of JGL and Don Jon was one of my favorite films of the year-so this is a very hard question for me.
He was great in Mysterious Skin, able to show such promising acting capabilities at such a young age…but I don’t think that is what I’ll go with, though it is notably one of my favorite JGL performances ever.

I’m going to have to go with his role of Joe in Looper, mostly because it falls in as my favorite JGL film. The reason I chose Joe is because it shows of Joseph Gordon Levit’s capabilities as a leading man, which I think Hollywood is really unsure of considering how most of the films with him as a lead fair. I feel he is a capable enough actor to carry any kind of film, regardless of genre- and that if given the chance he can be one of our next great actors.

My favorite performance of his is definitely Mysterious Skin. He did such an amazing job and I remember being so impressed by how much he could convey with just his facial movements.

I loved him in 500 Days of Summer!

  6. Taylor Ramsdell says:

My favorite JGL performance is Mysterious Skin. This is the film that made me fall in love with JGL. The performance was powerful and emotional, and as always he added his signature JGL wit 😉

  7. Nick says:

Looper was undeniably his most outstanding performance. He was a perfect young Bruce Willis.

My favorite Joseph Gordon-Levitt performance would have to be in the cancer comedy 50/50. Looking at that classification – “cancer comedy” – it’s a wonder that the film works at all, and the reason it succeeds so completely is Gordon-Levitt’s winning lead performance. Heartbreaking, hilarious and bracingly human, Gordon-Levitt’s gorgeous, charismatic performance should have received more awards attention than it did. His chemistry with everyone else in 50/50 (from Seth Rogen to Anna Kendrick to Anjelica Huston) is electric, but it’s the scenes where his character, Adam, holds the screen on his own that really drive home what a spectacularly talented performer Gordon-Levitt is. In front of the camera, he’s lovable, emotional, compelling, and refreshingly truthful – in other words, he’s a masterful actor. If you haven’t seen 50/50, check it out. It’s Gordon-Levitt’s finest work to date (though Don Jon certainly constitutes a close second).

Does TV count? Because if so, Third Rock. He was a kid playing an adult in a kid’s body, and did a bang-up job.
