Will POWER RANGERS Be the Next DARK KNIGHT?

A couple days ago everyone’s favorite Malcolm-dad, Bryan Cranston, told Huffington Post that the upcoming Power Rangers: The Movie reboot (in which he’ll be playing floating-head-in-a-jar Zordon) will mightily morph itself into a more serious reimagining of the franchise—like Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. But we can’t help but wonder: is this really what Power Rangers fans want?

According to Cranston, “…this is as different a reimagining as the Batman television series as it became the Batman movie series. You can’t compare those two, and nor can you compare this movie version of the Power Rangers to that television series. It’s unrecognizable for the most part.”

Whoa there, buddy. Unrecognizable? Look, everyone loves The Dark Knight, but is that the tone we deserve or the one we need right now? This is Power Rangers, a martial arts saga about an alien that assembles five teenagers with attitude to battle a shrieking banshee-witch and a flayed man. Dark it is not.

But thankfully, Cranston went on to clarify that he only meant the film would delve deeper into the show’s gold-mine of teen themes, like bullying, cliques, and “dreams.” Which honestly sounds like a great place to expand the show in a way that lets it grow with its now-adult audience! And while we’re maybe working too hard to take Cranston at his word here, we kind of have to since he’s got the most well-rounded Power Rangers knowledge on the production team. How’s that? Oh, just because he basically got his start dubbing episodes of Power Rangers back in the day.

But what do you guys think? Are you psyched for a more serious Power Rangers? Do you prefer your Rangers a little doofy? Let’s discuss!
