Will Ferrell Will Log Into eSports Comedy from Legendary

If the sold-out arenas, huge million-dollar prize pools, and devoted fans from around the globe weren’t pretty big indicators that the world of professional eSports has hit the big time, then a comedy about the popular spectator event starring none other than Will Ferrell will probably get the job done.

Today Legendary Entertainment announced that Ferrell has signed on to star in a comedy about the growing business of big competitive gaming. (Disclosure: Nerdist is a subsidiary of Legendary Digitial.) The script will be written by Michael Kvamme and Jordan Dunn, who recently sold their spec script Operation: Prince of Freedom to Fox, and the untitled eSports film will be produced by Mosaic and Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions.

The very nature of eSports, with its normal five-on-five team competitions, might give us some idea as to what the story might look like, since many professional gamers are teenagers and most players retire in their twenties. Since Will Ferrell is decidedly not in his 20s there’s already some inherent problems for his character to have to deal with.

Talladega-Nights-will-ferrell

This isn’t the first time Ferrell will venture into the world of sports, having previously taken on  professional basketball with his ABA comedy Semi-Pro, as well as professional racing in the NASCAR-inspired comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Just like in Talladega Nights, which featured cameos from real drivers, the popular eSports teams Evil Geniuses and Fnatic are expected to appear in the film.

So while some of you might think that eSports are an unlikely vehicle for a Will Ferrell film, last year’s League of Legends finals did have more viewers than both the World Series and NBA Finals (yeah!), so there’s definitely an audience for them, and for this movie.
