Will Elon Musk Defeat His Latest Archnemesis?

Look, we get it, Peter Beck. At 18, you built your own rocket and strapped it on your bike for testing. You raised money from a man literally named Mr. Rocket to develop lightweight, space-worthy, 3D-printed rockets. You founded a company called Rocket Lab. Sure, it’s impressive. But if you want to step to Elon Musk and SpaceX, you best come correct.

Beck is aiming to be Musk’s next nemesis, targeting a goal of consistently launching one rocket a week instead of SpaceX’s one a month. And while Rocket Lab’s “Electron” rockets can only haul 1/100th of what a Falcon 9 can, an Electron launch will cost 12 times less. But Musk has many successful supply and commercial runs under his belt–Beck has none. Does he have what it takes to bring a fledgling spaceflight company to the level of culture-changing? Time for Muskwatch.

Also on the show this week, scientists are releasing 20 million mosquitoes in Fresno, California to bang other mosquitoes to death, Musk throws shade at competitors on Twitter, and NASA is smashing space bots into asteroids. It’s all pretty sexy, to be honest.

Muskwatch airs on Nerdist.com and YouTube every Tuesday, but you can hack the planet and watch it two full days earlier on Sunday if you’re an Alpha subscriber. Find out how you can get 30 days free (and be 48 hours smarter than your dumb friends) right here.
