Australia has enough to deal with already: box jellyfish, great white sharks, inland taipans, funnel-web spiders…everything on the continent wants to kill you. Last September, mother nature flung a storm at southern Australia that knocked out power for more than 1.7 million residents. And to deal with the damaged infrastructure, Australia was looking for a more sustainable solution. While he didn’t step up with a plan for the spiders (he’s more of a bat guy), Elon Musk presented a solution: build the world’s biggest battery.
Musk wagered that Tesla could install the largest lithium ion battery storage facility in the world in Australia–100 MW of storage from a nearby French wind farm could supply 30,000 homes–to partially solve the country’s energy woes. On top of that, he tweeted that Tesla would complete the project in 100 days or the company would pay for the installation itself, a potential $50 million loss.
The Musk has until December 1st to make good on his promise. What do we think?
