Why Yes, the Game Boy XXL is a Thing that Exists (and It is Glorious)

Everything’s bigger in Texas …and Belgium, it seems, by the look of the Game Boy XXL: The Texas Edition. No, your eyes do not deceive you — that is, in fact, a monster-sized, playable Game Boy. And yes, it really works and we are all sorts of jealous. (SOMEBODY BRING IT TO OUR OFFICE TOUTE DE SUITE please and a-thank you!)

Creating a version of the Game Boy that makes us all feel like ants was no small feat, but fortunately, Hackaday user Raz is no slouch. The Belgian student engineer and all-around inventor-type dreamt up the endeavor with one of the organizers of a Belgian Chiptune festival called Nintendoom. While sitting around in a car one evening, they both considered the badassitude of “how cool it would be to have a giant functional Game Boy” at the event. Cut to one year later and the Game Boy XXL was born.

Using a Raspberry pi single-board computer in order to run software based on Retropie (meaning there’s a heck of a lot of other games to be played here, folks … !!!), the whole build consisted of fairly basic items, including bunch of medium-density fiberboard, wood glue, paint, and a 19″ computer monitor which he “disassembled and reused [with] various other components.”

You can even watch the thing in action (just try to not be jealous):

What games would you play on the biggest playable Game Boy the world has ever seen (at least as far as we know so don’t get mad at us if we’re wrong in the comments)? Let’s hear ’em all below.
