Wes Anderson Didn’t Direct METAL GEAR SOLID V, But Maybe He Should Have

Wes Anderson is always ripe for parody, as is any director with a distinct and effective style, really, and Saturday Night Live probably did it best with their Wes Anderson horror movie trailer from a couple years ago. Still, there’s room for others to give it a go, and YouTuber Jacob Rich did a commendable job with his reinterpretation of Metal Gear Solid V, which really softens the edges of the intensely quiet Solid Snake.

Rich had us from the opening frames, in which Snake crawls across the screen in a cardboard box to reveal the fake film festival selection banner, but beyond that, he nailed all the basic elements every Wes Anderson parody needs: the thick, yellow, sans serif font, pop and rock music from the ’60s and ’70s, seemingly emotionless characters who speak in unwavering monotone, one-point perspective camera angles, and a narrated list of items presented cleanly on a flat surface and filmed from directly above.

Game creator Hideo Kojima may have parted ways with Konami, but his spirit lives on in this video. (Even though technically, Quiet doesn’t speak. But of course Wes Anderson would reinterpret that part of the narrative to up the film’s quirk factor.) And good on Rich for throwing in a dynamite Castlevania reference: Snake’s Solid Eye and bandanna are hidden items in the 2010 game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. We’re also having fun imagining that Snake always approaches the dinner table while concealed by a cardboard box.
