It’s become a cinematic tradition for films to feature someone saying “welcome to…” And now there’s a supercut that allows you to see that happen in over 70 films in just over four minutes.
Burger Fiction has released its latest video, “Welcome to a Supercut,” which brings several of these moments together. One of the more fascinating aspects of these clips is the wildly different context and meaning. The vast majority of these scenes are meant as sincere introductions from a friendly face. But there’s a definite insincere vibe from Independence Day, Spaceballs, Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl, Idiocracy, The Shawshank Redemption, Dredd, Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery, Point Break, The Silence Of The Lambs, Diamonds Are Forever, The Rock, Bad Boys, Juno, Dazed And Confused. That last clip we mentioned was also incredibly mean, and the Costco greeter from Idiocracy really needs a hug.
The video also has some clever transitions, including three Sean Connerys in a row with Diamonds are Forever, The Untouchables, and The Rock. It was also an inspired touch to go directly from “Temple of Doom” reference in I Love You, Man to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which has a less dramatic name within the context of the film. Bill Murray also gets a call out from Zombieland to Groundhog Day. Using The Meaning of Life‘s “welcome to the middle of the film” in the middle of the video is also a fun moment. But they missed a chance to go from the Thunderdome reference in Waiting… to the actual Thunderdome in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome!
