An estimated 92% of us experience earworms. Despite the annoying times that we can’t get a chorus or a hook of an overplayed pop song out of our heads, getting a really good earworm stuck can be one of the best things ever.

We here at Nerdist are dead set on bringing you those types of songs, if only for the weekend. We’ll be scouring the internet for the best earworms we can shove into your grey matter!

There’s something magical when a song seems to keep showing up in your life from random unrelated sources. It’s all completely serendipitous and a strange confluence of coincidence, but it’s like the song itself seeks you out. We’ve all experienced this at some point and I couldn’t be happier that this time around for me it’s a song I really enjoy instead of an old jingle from a commercial. Hopefully this will latch onto your eardrums and continue to show up in your lives too.

Louis the Child – “It’s Strange (feat. K.Flay)” 

This song has found its way to me in four different ways from individual sources, so how could I not feature it a my column about earworms?

Hearing it on two different podcasts recently would have been enough for me to download it had I not already been hooked after hearing it on the soundtrack of FIFA 2016. I’m not above working lame things into sentences so “It’s Strange” that I happened to hear it again earlier this week coming from the headphones of a stranger on a bus. Unsure if it was the same song, I made the apparent terrible faux pas of interacting with the stranger to ask him if it was the song he was listening to. The guy, who couldn’t have been more than 5 years younger than me, confirmed the song had found me again and added a glaring look as if to tell me that I were the oldest of all the grandpas who ever grandpa’d.

The only logical conclusion I can come to – other than the stranger on the bus is mean and will someday become an uncool old man in his thirties like me – is that this amalgam of electronica, dance, and a little bit of dub-step has become sentient and has set out to change my mind about those genres. Well, it’s working because this song is delightful.

The track, although electronic at its core, has a more relaxed and lighter feel than one would expect in a song that still features dub-step-like builds and drops. The breathy vocals provided by artist K.Flay are a wonderful addition to the song and help to set it apart from other EDM artists. I’m the first to admit I’m slightly pessimistic to most EDM these days but artists like Louis the Child sure are changing my mind.
