WATCHMEN Has Been Picked Up to Full Series By HBO

Who watches the Watchmen? You will, next year on HBO. Damon Lindelof’s pilot, picked up to a full television series today, is based on the iconic comic book limited series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

While the television series pick-up isn’t much of a shock, with HBO President Casey Bloys speaking highly of the project just last month, the story itself might surprise longtime fans of the comic book. This version of Watchmen will not be just a simple adaptation, promising instead to break new ground by taking the story in a different direction that remains to be seen. (Lindelof explained his decision to “remix” the original Watchmen story in a letter to fans posted to Instagram earlier this year.)

The series boasts an intriguing cast list that includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, and Louis Gossett Jr. in unannounced roles, although some hints have been released about their characters.

In the Watchmen universe, vigilantes are frowned upon and “super” heroes are considered outlaws. When a mystery brings together former crimefighting teammates, none of them are prepared for the truth that will be uncovered. After the twelve-issue series was originally published by DC Comics in the late 1980s, the gritty take on superheroes had lasting effects on the medium for years to come.

The full series will give viewers an unprecedented look at the Watchmen starting in 2019 on HBO.
