Watch the “First Look” Trailer for VERONICA MARS Creator Rob Thomas’ IZOMBIE Now!

The CW has become the TV network of choice for genre fans in recent years, with shows like Arrow, The Flash, and Vampire Diaries. And on March 17th, the network will premiere what’s likely to become its next hit — iZombie, adapted from the DC/Vertigo comic series by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas. Today at the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, the CW unveiled a “First Look” trailer for the series, which looks to capture the same mix of mystery and humor that made Mars such a fan-favorite — with the added bonus of its titular brain-eating protagonist, Olivia “Liv” Moore, played by Power Rangers RPM‘s Ranger Operator Series Yellow, a/k/a Rose McIver. Rounding out the cast are Robert Buckley, Malcolm Goodwin, and The Vampire Diaries‘ David Anders.

Thomas told today’s assembled critics that he didn’t follow the comic book (penned by Chris Roberson and illustrated by Madman creator Mike Allred) all that closely in developing the show, omitting its other supernatural creatures to focus squarely on its undead heroine, who works in a city morgue, which supplies her with all the brains she needs in order to survive. The producer explained that the network was very much interested in the show’s police procedural component, but that Liv’s voiceover narration — as the above trailer suggests — will be lighter in tone than Veronica‘s hardboiled “Chandler-esque” VO.

What do you guys think? Given its success with Arrow and Flash, can the CW produce a successful adaptation of a comic that’s not set in the DC Universe? If so, is Thomas the guy to pull it off? Let us know below.

  1. Shawn Johnson says:

A show from Rob Thomas about a zombie with powers that solves crime? I’m in, don’t care if it has little to do with the comic

  2. Nich Hustler says:

When these shows get made about things people are interested in, I don’t understand why people can’t treat these like what if’s or alternative universes. Maybe this version isn’t for you, but I don’t need to watch the exact thing I just read. I’m happy for all the versions of a thing I like being different interpretations. Sometimes that doesn’t work out. I’m okay with that also, at least someone tried something new.

  3. Steph says:

For you guys talking about this ripping off a comic book. Warm Bodies came out before White Trash Zombie….so there’s that. Please if anyone’s ripping off anything that book did it first.

  4. Dustin says:

TRU CALLING.  ANYONE?  Dear lord it’s like, exactly that show.

  6. Mandy says:

I think its really good that the director/writers/producers are admitting right off the bat that they are only following the comics loosely. Its a smart move because fans of the comic can’t be too angry or disapproving when it doesn’t perfectly meet their expectations.

    • Jim Davis says:

“Loosely” is being generous at best. They gutted it completely. They stole the most fundamental premise and tossed every single other thing away completely.

Hell – they even changed the main character’s name in the service of a #$%^ half-baked PUN. There’s no respect for the source material AT ALL here.

There’s nothing for fans of the comic to say here: this isn’t the story they loved. All we can do is mourn. This just means that we’ll NEVER get to see the real thing.

  7. Mitch says:

Reminds me of the White Trash Zombie book series by Diana Rowland

    • Ashley says:

it’s almost exactly like the White Trash series.. i expected there to be mention on how it was inspired by it.. huh. either way, i’m sold. it’s been a while since i was hooked by a CW series.

  8. Paulzy says:

I cant wait till they cancel this dumb show

    • Freddy says:

You realize that you don’t even watched a single episode yet, right?

      Less internet hate, dude.

      • Joe Bob says:

YOU realize that nothing here is even close to the comic, right?

Lead character’s name is Liv instead of Gwen, she’s a coroner instead of gravedigger, not a single sign of anyone that could be considered Spot, some detective that is getting help from her rather than chasing her down (with his partner), no sign of Ellie AT ALL (who is pretty damn important in the story), and they are basically just using the premise of Gwen getting memories from the brains she eats as a way to do a “monster of the week” show until they can serialize it in the same way that they did with Smallville, Supernatural, and every other show they have?

UGH! So saddened by this trailer.

        • Nich Hustler says:

Fortunately as a person who had never even heard of the comic till this series was announced I have none of your hang ups.

The premise looks interesting and it could flop, so could anything. It could not flop but still be terrible. I’m going to give it a few episodes and see how I feel.

Honestly even when these shows get made about things I am interested in, I don’t understand why people can’t treat these like what if’s or alternative universes. Maybe this version isn’t for you, but I don’t need to watch the exact thing I just read. I’m happy for all the versions of a thing I like being different interpretations.
