Thanks to her starring roles in Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy, Karen Gillan seems likely to be a fan favorite comic convention guest for the foreseeable future. But what if thatâs all she had to look forward to?
Perhaps inspired by her experiences on the convention circuit, Gillan has written, directed, and starred in Conventional, a new short horror film produced by Fun Size Horror. In the short, Gillan portrays Rachel Milligan, an actress whose sole claim to fame is a starring role in a slasher film called Axe Wound 2.
Horror and comic book conventions can be lucrative for some guests…but not for Rachel! She has to watch her rival, Emma (Lara Sebastian) easily draw in a crowd. And Rachelâs only fans are a sparse group of somewhat disturbing cosplayers dressed as Stu Mac, the serial killer from Axe Wound 2. As much as Rachel tries to put a positive spin on her situation, her dignity, her youth, and her sanity are rapidly leaving her behind.
Matt Cardarpole and James Ransone costar in Conventional as two of the more prominent Stu Mac cosplayers, with a quick cameo by Ryan Turek as the original Stu Mac.
Conventional is the second short film that Gillan has written and directed. Gillanâs first short was called Coward. Her upcoming projects include the revenge Western In a Valley of Violence, and the sci-fi drama The Circle opposite Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, and John Boyega. Gillan is also expected to reprise her role as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
