Jimmy Darling really is the champion for each and every freak he encounters. So it’s no surprise that, when looking for a musical number to really jazz up his part of the American Horror Story: Freak Show, he went with the ’90s most beloved grungies, Nirvana, to implore them all to “Come As You Are.”
We’ve seen many an outcast type singer having their tunes crooned throughout this season: from Elsa’s take on David Bowie’s “Life on Mars”, Bette and Dot’s take on Fiona Apple’s “Criminal,” and Jessica Lange‘s second sing-song-y delivery of a Lana Del Rey tune (“Gods and Monsters”). After last night’s episodeâwhich finally brought to a head the unspoken daddy issues between Jimmy Darling and Wendell “The Strongman” Dell Toledoâit seems as though aggressive acceptance of one’s own perceived irregularities might not be enough to save the so-called freaks. Weird when a Nirvana song is used to represent the idealized, naive point of view, isn’t it?
Here’s a fan-recorded clip of the recording AND the soundtrack full version if you’re into that sort of thing:
There’s also a fun nugget embedded in this performance â as explained by Marc “Good Egg” Hogan over at Wondering Sound: “Longtime viewers of the so-called anthology series may recall a past Peters character, season one’s Tate Langdon, also liked Nirvana.” Ooh la la! Is that another ~universe connection~ between seasons?
I mean probably not but hey, it’s fun if nothing else!
What did you think of Jimmy’s performance? Let us know in the comments and on Twitter!.
It was amazing. He did an awesome job
I really liked Evan Peters performance of the Nirvana “Come As You Are”
