There’s no denying that Daniel Radcliffe is a now legit adult actor, having shown off his romantic side in What If, his devil side in Horns, and his all around versatility in Victor Frankenstein. Hey, he even voiced himself in an episode of Bojack Horseman! But remember when he was just a wee lad? This recently resurfaced video shows Radcliffe at eleven years old, auditioning for a little (massive) film franchise called Harry Potter.

The screen test doesn’t just focus on Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone. Radcliffe reads scenes from the first three films, presumably as a way to test out his ability to cover Harry’s wild-eyed innocence in the first film to some of the darker moments in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. And Radcliffe’s not just cute as a button, though he is that. You can clearly see the young actor’s early promise in these test scenes. He knows all his lines, never breaks character, and those iconic round glasses fit his face perfectly. Then when he collapses into that great toothy smile, okay, you’ll kinda melt.

But honestly, it’s all about the second scene. Harry explains what he sees and hears every time a dementor gets close to him, and Radcliffe’s intensity is downright impressive. Look at that laser-focus in his eyes when he mentions his mother and the curse of Voldemort. If you ask me, that’s the moment when the casting director knew that this unassuming boy was ‘the one.’ And the rest is history.
