Watch a 5-Minute Trailer for INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE

It’s been 20 years since we heard Bill Pullman deliver his super-inspirational speech calling for the world to unite against alien invaders in Independence Day, and we’re almost ready for the film’s long anticipated sequel to hit theaters. We’ve seen lots of teasers into what awaits us in Independence Day: Resurgence, but we haven’t been able to get a nice, long look into the Roland Emmerich-directed sequel… until now, of course. 20th Century Fox has just released a giant extended trailer (seriously, it’s nearly five glorious minutes), and it’s amazing.

I’ll be honest, when I first hear they were making a sequel of Independence Day, I was dubious that they’d be able to recapture the magic from the original film. No Will Smith, no Mae Whitman, no amazing ’90s fashion, and perhaps none of that campy-yet-slightly-serious action? I just wasn’t getting my hopes up. But after watching this extended trailer, I think Resurgence could be a pretty spectacular sequel.

The trailer gives us a lot of information into what we can expect from the film. After the events from 1996, the aliens sent out a distress call into the void of space. While those of us on Earth had assumed it was a call that simply went unanswered, it seems like the aliens just had a bit of a hike to get back to Earth to rescue their kin. After a 20-year journey to our home planet, the aliens are back with bigger ships and a brand new leader.

While I imagine there will be parts of the movie that will feel familiar, I am really excited that Independence Day: Resurgence feels like a continuation of the story, not just a sequel that retells the same story and reuses the same jokes and plot devices. This will be an amazing summer action flick for sure!

Independence Day: Resurgence hits theaters on June 23. Will you see it in theaters? What do you think of the extended trailer? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
