Warner Bros. Launches Oscar Campaign Behind FURY ROAD

At this point, pop-culture writers are obligated by law to begin all articles concerning Mad Max: Fury Road with some kind of “what a lovely day” leade, so…Oh, what a day! What a lovely day! The reason that this day is particularly lovely is that Warner Bros. has officially launched a campaign in support of Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Oscar chances.

Every year, the major studios set up “For Your Consideration” websites and inundate Academy voters with emails trumpeting their releases from the past year so that the prestigious pictures are on everyone’s mind as they fill out their ballots. Warner Bros. unveiled their 2015 site today, with information about campaigns for Black Mass and Mad Max: Fury Road proudly plastered on the front page. (Warner Bros. releases Magic Mike XXL and passes that up for Best Picture and Channing Tatum for Best Actor? In a year this thin with candidates? He could stand a real chance. But this is all neither here nor there.)

As much as the words “Fury Road for Best Picture of the Year” may lift the hairs on the back of our necks, it’s important to have a little context. It’s good news that Warner Bros. has confirmed their intentions to support a run for the Oscar down Fury Road, but that’s far from a guarantee of anything. Studios with enough money to mount big fancy campaigns get behind any picture they think stands a snowball’s chance at securing a nomination. Exhibit A, from Paramount’s 2014 promotional site:

And so the announcement of Fury Road‘s bid for the golden statue really comes as more of a symbolic victory than anything. It’s not too long ago that the thought of a major-studio post-apocalyptic thriller standing even a slight probability of victory would’ve been beyond reason.
