Vomiting Buns Are the Newest Food Trend

The newest food trend may leave you feeling slightly ill. I’m not talking about after an exceptionally large amount of food, I mean during your meal. Maybe even the moment you’re served.

Yum Cha restaurant in Hong Kong specializes in dim sum, and being hands on with your food is part of the experience. “Yum cha” is a Cantonese phrase associated with going out for a dim sum brunch, but its literal translation is “drink tea.” You’re going to need to drink a lot of it to get through Yum Cha’s particularly visual speciality: a sweet bun that looks like its vomiting up its insides.

The sweet bao buns at the restaurant are meant to be poked and prodded until they just can’t take it anymore, then they seemingly puke up their delicious filling. The little bulging eyes that sit atop each bun are what make it all the more hilarious to watch as the little desserts lose their lunch.

It all may be too much for an eater to handle, but once you get past the puking, the insides are filled with a delicious egg custard which makes it all worthwhile. All the ingredients are natural, with carrot juice serving as the dye for the yellow buns and matcha for the green buns.

Now, why would a restaurant put vomiting snacks on their menu? “We wanted to modernize the presentation of Chinese dim sum to ignite people’s visual senses and attract younger generation to dine out with their grannies.” While combining barf and food wouldn’t be my first choice for bringing in new clientele, it makes sense that the restaurant is reaching out to the millennials with such an Instagram-worthy meal.

Retching food is nothing new, back in October of last year pooping and vomiting was a big part of experience of eating the Sanrio Gudetama dim sum. I’ll never look at chocolate filling the same way again.
