Remember that crazy-looking video that featured Mario running around on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4? If you thought it was creepy for how photorealistic some of the environments appeared, you’ve only witnessed the tip of the iceberg. User Koola took to the Unreal Engine forum to release a small video and several shots that may be the most impressive showcase of just how aesthetically authentic an environment can look in the engine. The realism is simply jaw-dropping. Take a look at the video above to see the the engine running in real-time.

So does this mean that it won’t be too long before video game environments begin to look this good? Possibly. It’s lofty when you consider the amount of processing power it would take to render an environment like this, as well as different elements like character models. But that doesn’t make Koola’s work any less impressive. If this is in any way indicative of what’s to come in future titles like Kingdom Hearts III and Tekken 7, you can color me beyond excited.
