Universal Plans Fast and Furious Spinoffs and Prequels

Are you ready for the Fast and the Furious Cinematic Universe? Universal Pictures and Vin Diesel have confirmed that the Fast and the Furious films are being eyed for prequels and spinoff movies.

“We’ve written out story lines for various characters,” Diesel told Variety. “We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.”

Presumably the spinoff films would center on the members of Dominic “Dom” Toretto’s crew. Lucas Black’s Sean Boswell has already headlined The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, which could potentially give his character a shot at a spinoff as well.

But the most obvious choice for a Fast and Furious spinoff film is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Luke Hobbs, a former adversary turned ally to Dom and his team. Johnson has previously indicated a willingness to put Hobbs in a solo adventure.

Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley also told Variety that “we’re certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now. It’s an ensemble cast and there’s room to bring characters in and out.”

Any potential sequels won’t be happening before Fast and Furious 8, which already has Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray signed to helm the picture. “You can’t keep having every movie have bigger and bigger stunts forever and ever and ever,” said Universal’s Jeff Shell. “Eventually you have to really focus on the story. We’ll still have big stunts but bringing in this amazing storyteller is going to be great.”

Diesel added, “We have a director who is going to bring the darkness out and bring out the character.”
