Unidentified Eerie ‘Ping’ Found in Seas in Northern Canada, Time for Monster Suspect Line-Up

According to Game of Thrones, “the night is dark and full of terrors.” But on ye olde planet Earth, we’re going to have to say that if anything is dark and full of terrors, it’s apparently the ocean. Not only do we keep finding creepy creatures and spooky sounds from the depths of Davy Jones’ Locker, but now there is an unidentified eerie sound that’s scaring away all of the sea mammals near it. And that sound is coming from… Northern Canada! *Cue lightning strike and extra Maple syrup on your breakfast*

According to Time, a “mysterious noise emanating from the sea floor in one of Canada’s northern territories” has been scaring away sea mammals like whales and seals, and scientists, and even the Canadian Armed Forces (which we can only assume looks something like the Rebel force on Hoth) have yet to find its source. Naturally, we’d like to take a look at the top three “usual suspects.”

1. THE THING:

You know it, you love it, it could be you for all we know. It’s The Thing. Height: Varies. Weight: Also Varies. Sex: Varies some more. M.O.: Found in arctic regions, fond of duplicating and destroying its enemies, off-the-charts gross factor. The Thing is highly suspect here due to its penchant for cold climates, and its undeniable creep factor. Canadians, make sure this… thing! is on your list.

2. THE CTHULHU:

It’s the source of old-timey sailors’ worst nightmares, and also non-Euclidian angles that will bend your brains out. It’s The Madness from the Sea, the weird tentacle beard, H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu. Height: Giant. Weight: Giant. Sex: No thank you. M.O.: The Cthulhu angers easily and is known for distorting perceptions of space. When he’s not trapped in an ancient corpse city, he’s inspiring Disney characters. If one seaman is left over after the ping has been investigated, this is your baddie!

3. GODZILLA:

It’s the beast from the East, the thrilla with the suffix zilla, the one, the only, Gojira. Height: Legendary. Weight: Legendary. Sex: This beast only needs one back. M.O.: Not quite gorilla, not quite whale, Godzilla is known for his fierce warcry, distaste of giant moths, and penchant for destroying skyscrapers. If any hint of atomic breath is found near the mysterious ping, well, we’re all screwed.

If the source of the mysterious ping isn’t a horrible fictional sea or space monster—as if, right?—some people have speculated that it could be the result of a nearby mining corporation’s activities or even a ploy by Greenpeace. But so far, both organizations have denied any connection to the mysterious sound…

What do you think is causing the mysterious ping in the seas in Northern Canada’s Nunavat region? Do you wish to speculate or are you having… nun-av-at? Let us know in the comments below!
