We’re getting pretty dang hyped for The Umbrella Academy, a new show based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s Eisner Award-winning graphic novels and comics of the same name. (The trailer dropped this week has got total X-Men vibes, but with a more darkly humorous slant.) The series comes to Netflix on February 15, but luckily, in the meantime, Gerard Wayâwho was the lead singer of rock band My Chemical Romance until they dissolved in 2013âhas dropped a brand new (cover) song that ties into his comic series. The song, “Hazy Shade of Winter,” also features Way’s My Chemical Romance bandmate Ray Toro on guitar. You can check out the full audio track in the video below.
The song starts as a melancholy instrumental until the vocals kick in around the one-minute mark. The lyrics begin slowly, sadly: “Time, time time / See what’s become of me.” But then the tempo ramps up, Way’s familiar vocals go full-tilt, and that trademark My Chemical Romance sound officially settles. This may not technically be an MCR song, but with Way and Toro’s involvement, any old school fan of the band is sure to love what they hear here.
The Umbrella Academy TV show is set in a fictional future world where 43 women across the world give birth at the same time without ever being pregnant. A wealthy man named Reginald Hargreeves adopts seven of the children, who have unique abilities, and raises them in a mansion as a superhero team. The series follows the kids into adulthood, after Hargreeves’ death, and when they’re called on to save the world. Typical superhero stuff, ya know? The show stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, David Castañeda, Aidan Gallagher, Cameron Britton, and Mary J. Blige, and looks dark, funny, and totally great. We can’t wait to see what magic comes from all of this talent in one place.
