Winter 2019 TV Premieres: Your Guide to New and Returning Shows

Winter TV is about to kick into gear, with a handful of big midseason premieres hitting airwaves and streaming services in the coming weeks and months. That means the return of shows on a brief hiatus from the fall, new seasons of old staples, and a slew of brand new series ready for your consumption. We have everything from new True Detective, to a rebooted Brooklyn Nine-Nine, to a show where Gillian Anderson plays a sex therapist to look forward to this winter. But because there’s an overwhelming amount of television out there already, we’ve put together this handy guide of the most notable shows on this midseason schedule, complete with air dates, where to watch info, and whatever else we think you need to know before you start watching.

JANUARY

Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Returns: January 10

NBC saved this beloved Mike Schur comedy after Fox cancelled it last year. It finally returns for an action-packed sixth season this week.

The Good Place

Sex Education
Debuts: January 11
Watch it on: Netflix

Gillian Anderson plays a sex therapist who counsels her teen son in this charming coming-of-age series.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Returns: January 11

It’s the beginning of the end when the back-half of the final season kicks off this week.

True Detective
Returns: January 13

After a genre-shattering first season and a disappointing second, Nic Pizzolatto’s hard-boiled detective series returns with Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff as a pair of Arkansas detects investigating a small-town kidnapping.

The Passage
Debuts: January 14

Justin Cronin’s seminal vampire series get the TV treatment in this new Mark Paul Gosselaar-starring show.

The Flash
Returns: January 15

Barry Allen and the crew are back to finish out the show’s fifth season.

Roswell, New Mexico
Debuts: January 15
Watch it on: The CW @ 9PM/8C

Melinda Metz’s Roswell High gets it second adaptation – after WB classic Roswell – with this CW series about the famous alien-inhabited town.

Riverdale
Returns: January 16
Watch it on: The CW @ 8PM/7C

The mystery of the Gargoyle King continues when Riverdale returns for more razzly dazzly, neon-drenched delight.

Deadly Class
Debuts: January 16
Watch it on: Syfy @ 10PM/9C

Benedict Wong leads this adaptation of the cult comic book series about an academy that trains the next generation of crime assassins.

Schitt’s Creek
Returns: January 16
Watch it on: Pop @ 10PM/9C

This Canadian comedy starring father and son Eugene and Dan Levy returns to American airwaves on Pop for its fifth season.

Supernatural 
Returns: January 17
Watch it on: The CW @ 8PM/7C

Yes, Supernatural is still on TV. Season 14 continues next week; the fourth episode back, titled “Lebanon” and airing February 7, will be the show’s 300th.

A Discovery of Witches
Debuts: January 17
Watch it on: Sundance Now and Shudder

Though the show – about a historian witch thrown into an ancient mystery – already premiered in the U.K. last year, it finally comes to America this January, where the 8-episode first season will be available all at once on the Sundance Now app and streaming service Shudder.

Star Trek Discovery
Returns: January 17
Watch it on: CBS All-Access

The eagerly-anticipated second season of the latest Star Trek series will premiere on the CBS speciality app next week.

Carmen Sandiego
Debuts: January 18
Watch it on: Netflix

Our favorite world exploring villain gets an origin story in this Gina Rodriguez-voiced Netflix cartoon series.

Punisher
Returns: January 18
Watch it on: Netflix

Though Netflix recently canceled most of its Marvel series, a few remain, including this dark Daredevil spinoff starring Jon Bernthal, which returns for its second season later this month.

Supergirl
Returns: January 20
Watch it on: The CW @ 8PM/7C

Our favorite female vigilante is back for the second half of its fourth season, after the third “Elseworlds” crossover event in December.

Charmed
Returns: January 20
Watch it on: The CW @ 9PM/8C

Though its debut didn’t exactly have a warm reception, the first season of the Charmed reboot soldiers on in the slot after Supergirl.

Shameless
Returns: January 20
Watch it on: Showtime @ 8PM/7C

Emmy Rossum wraps up her long term – and heavily acclaimed – stint as Fiona Gallagher in the back half of the show’s ninth season.

Arrow
Returns: January 21
Watch it on: The CW @ 8PM/7C

Another CW superhero show kicks back returns, followed by…

Black Lightning
Returns: January 21
Watch it on: The CW @ 9PM/8C

Yet another one! CW is killing it with their DC programming, although Black Lightning isn’t technically part of the shared Arrowverse.

The Magicians

We can’t wait for the fourth season of grown-up Hogwarts to come back later this month!

Broad City
Returns: January 24
Watch it on: Comedy Central @ 10PM/9C

Get ready to say goodbye to Abbi and Ilana; the fifth and final season of this beloved female stoner series wraps up this year.

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt 
Returns: January 25
Watch it on: Netflix

Likewise, the second-half of the fourth and final season of this zany, instantly iconic Netflix series bid adieu this month.

I Am the Night
Debuts: January 28
Watch it on: USA @ 9PM/8C

Wonder Woman collaborators Patty Jenkins and Chris Pine re-team for this 6-episode miniseries about the Black Dahlia murder case.

FEBRUARY

The ABC Murders
Debuts: February 1
Watch it on: Amazon Prime

Based on Agatha Christie’s novel of the same name, this Amazon series stars John Malkovich as famed detective Hercule Poirot and Rupert Grint as a fellow inspector who investigate a murderer known as “ABC.”

The Walking Dead
Returns: February 10
Watch it on: AMC @ 9PM/8C

How will the show work without Rick Grimes? We’ll find out when the ninth season returns in February.

The Umbrella Academy
Debuts: February 15
Watch it on: Netflix

Based on the comic series by My Chemical Romance’s Gerward Way and Brazilian artist Gabriel Bá, the show follows 43 children who were mysteriously born to mothers who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before, seven of whom are adopted by a billionaire who prepares the supernaturally inclined children to save thew world. Ellen Page and Mary J. Blige star.

Doom Patrol
Debuts: February 15
Watch it on: DC Universe

Based on the DC Comics superhero team of the same name, this series premieres on the DC’s video-on-demand service next month.
