Twitter Users Match Anime Scenes to Real Locations in Japan

Japan is packed with places to go and things to see–add the bonus of experiencing the exact locations from your favorite anime and manga series and you’ve got yourself a slice-of-life scavenger hunt! Two Twitter users from Japan have been doing just that recently, and we couldn’t be happier with their stunning results via Kotaku.

Bassist Tom scouted out the exact stair-well from Sound! Euphonium promotional imagery featuring four main classmates. The anime adaptation takes place in the historic city of Uji, which is a lesser-known destination right between two popular cities, Kyoto and Nara. Centuries before Sound! Euphonium, this quaint city was famous for its green tea–which is saying a lot because green tea is pretty epic everywhere in Japan. The second season of this anime just started airing in Japan, so be sure to check in on the manga and first season whenever you get a chance!

Another Twitter user, Kuro Buta Piggy, uploaded her IRL finds using scenes from another Kyoto Animation anime, Free! It’s set in the fictional city of Iwatobi which is identically based on Iwami, a sea-side city in Tottori prefecture from the ChÅ«goku region. It’s quite a leap away from the hype of Tokyo–but like the anime city of Iwatobi, the real Iwami has its charms and we have these photos to prove it.

Delicious squid, serene beaches, and towering mountains aren’t the only things attracting people to this location now–Iwami boasts a surge of tourism thanks to the swim club anime. It’s a pilgrimage that any ultimate fan would be proud to make. The Iwami Tourism Association routinely creates special events and merchandise based on Free! for traveling fans, and even put out a cute map with the help of Kyoto Animation dedicated to specific spots as seen in Kuro Buta Piggy’s photos. You can stream Free! on Crunchyroll for now, and get yourself over to Iwami later!

The diverse scenery throughout Japan continues to inspire anime artists as they craft series and films with their homeland in mind. How do you feel about animes replicating IRL locations? Do you plan on traveling to any of your favorite anime spots in IRL? Let us know!
