Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirrel is Our New Hero

We all thought of it as a ridiculous joke from Anchorman, but in fact, it is possible for squirrels to waterski. And not only is it possible, it’s been going on for almost four decades. Twiggy, or more specifically, Twiggy IV, is actually very well known as “the water skiing squirrel.” She may also be the only squirrel to ever perform at the X Games, as seen in the following video from GoPro.

Twiggy kicked things off by swimming straight to the remote control boat while wearing a tiny life jacket. From there, she knew how to properly set up and put on a show for the crowd.

That clip is from the X Games Austin in 2015, but the video and the story behind it have been making the rounds again courtesy of Laughing Squid. As you may have gathered from her name, Twiggy IV is not the first Twiggy. According to Twiggy’s official site, the original Twiggy was a baby squirrel who was adopted by Chuck and Lou Ann Best in 1978 after she was separated from her nest during a hurricane. Somewhere along the way, the Bests taught Twiggy how to waterski, and she became a traveling sensation at various attractions.

Twiggy IV still makes public appearances, including a recent a boat show in Toronto.

There’s also an Instagram account for Twiggy, but it doesn’t appear to have been updated in a while.
