TV-Cap: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Will End with Season 8

Did you spend your weekend with the season premieres of Outlander and Fear the Walking Dead? It doesn’t sound like a bad way to spend Saturday and Sunday evenings. Jump into today’s TV-Cap to read our recaps of those premieres, to find out about the end of The Vampire Diaries, to learn which important character is coming back for Netflix’s Gilmore Girls revival, and more.

See Ya, Mystic Falls. It looks as though the story of the Salvatores, Elena, Bonnie, Caroline, and everyone else will be coming to a close next year. Ian Somerhalder appeared at Walker Stalker Con on Sunday and told fans during a panel that The Vampire Diaries will end with season eight. He said, “We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice.” The CW hasn’t announced anything official, but given that Nina Dobrev departed last season and that Kat Graham said she’s leaving with season eight, maybe it’s time. I’d rather see them end it on their own terms. [TVLine]

Using a Hex. Rip Hunter and co. are traveling back to the Old West in the next installment of Legends of Tomorrow. “The Magnificent Eight” will see them run into an old friend of Rip’s, Jonah Hex. Photos tease Hex and a new job for Ray. See more pics from the upcoming episode at Comic Book Resources. [Images: The CW]

Sisterly Ties. BBC America’s adaptation of Dirk Gently has found their Amanda Brotzman. Hannah Marks will play the character afflicted with a genetic disorder. She’s the sister of Todd (Elijah Wood). [Nerdist]

The Big Question. Season two of Powers will premiere on May 31 (get a look at the season above), and the showrunner and cast members appeared at Emerald City Comicon for promotion duties. Our own Dan Casey hosted a panel with them to discuss the “Who Killed Retro Girl?” arc of the next season and more. Read about the highlights here at Nerdist.

Crazy Smile. The character portraits for AMC’s take on Preacher keep coming. The latest shows off Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy, and I have to say, he nails the maniacal look rather perfectly. Preacher will premiere on May 22. [Nerdist, Image: AMC]

Sharing Is Caring. The trailer for season six of Game of Thrones showed Liam Cunningham’s Davos Seaworth grabbing Longclaw and apologizing to someone(s) for what they’re about to see. Cunningham appeared on Conan and shared more information about that clip. I don’t think it’s that spoilery, but I’ll let you decide for yourself. Watch if you wish. [Nerdist]

Preheat the Oven! It’s happening! Melissa McCarthy will reprise her role as Sookie St. James in the Gilmore Girls revival. McCarthy’s schedule is packed, but Amy Sherman-Palladino is being as accommodating as she can in order to work the actress in. I wouldn’t expect McCarthy to have a big role, but I’ll take anything. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Beautiful and Creepy. Does any series blend the weird with the gorgeous quite like Showtime’s Penny Dreadful? Both aspects of the world are on display in the latest trailer for season three (it’s slated to premiere on May 1). Which parts of the look ahead are most appealing to you? [Nerdist]

Maaaybe? The Flash was already the sort of show where any character from the DC universe could appear or be mentioned, but the addition of the Multiverse has opened up the possibilities even more. In fact, some comments series executive producer Andrew Kreisberg made to Entertainment Weekly could mean Power Girl is coming to The Flash—emphasis on “could.” Read all about it right this way.

Zombies, Highlanders, Etc. The weekend brought season premieres for Starz and AMC, and we’re here to catch you up. Learn what happened on Outlander with a return to the past and then jump to the ocean to get the scoop on Fear the Walking Dead.

Do you think it’s time for The Vampire Diaries to end? Are you excited Melissa McCarthy is returning for Gilmore Girls? Sound off in the comments.
