It’s Wednesday, and that means it’s Mr. Robot day. The penultimate episode of season 1 airs tonight, and I can’t wait to see what happens next—I won’t bother to make predictions because the show goes in so many unexpected directions. Read today’s TV-Cap for an interview with two cast members from Mr. Robot, to watch trailers for Narcos and Season 2 of Manhattan, and to learn about the latest villainous addition to Gotham.
Hacking Answers. USA’s Mr. Robot has taken the craziest of twists and turns in its eight episodes. Sam Esmail’s hacker thriller dives deep into a number of issues ranging from mental to societal. It’s the kind of series you’ll need to talk about with someone to fully digest, and our own Alicia Lutes found the best folks to talk with. She spoke with Carly Chaikin (Darlene) and Portia Doubleday (Angela) about the show’s themes and perception of reality–and yes, the big reveal of last week’s episode. Leaving Town. The Troubles of Syfy’s Haven are coming to an end. The network has canceled the supernatural drama after five seasons. Showrunner Gabrielle Stanton said that when the remainder of Season 5 begins airing, it will build towards an ending–they made that decision just in case the episodes would be the last ones. Wrestling the Host. The WWE has been on my radar more than usual lately–and by that I mean, it’s been on my radar, period. There’s Stephen Amell’s rivalry with Stardust, and now Jon Stewart will be hosting SummerSlam. The hosting gig will be Stewart’s first since leaving The Daily Show, and he’s a strong draw for the Pay-Per-View event. I’d consider tuning in just to check out what Stewart brings to the table/ring. SummerSlam takes place on August 23. [Nerdist]
Consequences. The latest look at Season 2 of Manhattan shows that working on the project has fallout. Secrets are a heavy burden that weigh on everyone involved and weigh on everyone differently. Besides offering teases–like what happened to Frank Winter–the new trailer gives the first glimpse at William Petersen and Neve Campbell in the series. Season 2 of Manhattan will premiere on October 13.
Babysitting Duties. Working for Cat Grant has a lot of perks. Kara Danver’s responsibilities are all over the place and apparently include babysitting Kat’s son Carter. TVLine has learned that Levi Miller (Pan) will play the 12-year-old in Supergirl. He’s apparently the opposite of his mother and not based on the son Cat has in the comics. [TVLine]
Violence and Money. One of the most common words I’ve heard used to describe Netflix’s Daredevil is “violent.” I think that’s going to apply doubly so to Narcos, and it’s going to be worse because it has roots in history. The series focuses on the story of Pablo Escobar–the building of his empire, the blood spilled to create it, and the DEA agents trying to take him down. The second trailer for the series paints quite the portrait. The series drops on Netflix on August 28. [/Film]
Gender Flip. Will I ever be surprised when Gotham adds another villain? No, no I will not. The newest rogue is to join the cast in Season 2 is Firefly. It won’t be either of the men who have had the name in comics though–this version of Firefly is a woman. Michelle Veintimilla has been cast in the role of Bridgit Pike. She’s a young woman who helps her brothers with arson. [Nerdist]
A Detective and a Vet. Syfy’s 12 Monkeys has added two familiar names in guest roles for the upcoming season. David Marciano (Homeland) will play NYPD detective John Damato–he’s working on a case affiliated with the Army of the 12 Monkeys–and David Dastmalchian (Ant-Man) will play Kyle Slade, a Vietnam vet. They’ll both show up in the sixth episode of Season 2 and because when is a factor in 12 Monkeys, they’ll appear in scenes set in 1975. [Variety]
A Different World. Fox’s TV version of Minority Report doesn’t take place in the same time and space as the movie, and they’re emphasizing the differences. It’s set 10 years after the film, during the demise of precrime and follows the rogue precog Dash (Stark Sands). He’s living off the grid and working with detective Lara Vega (Meagan Good) to try to stop crimes. The first look sets the stage and shows off the lovely production design. [/Film]
Elevated Aggression. Disney XD’s continuing to roll out origin stories ahead of the debut of their animated take on Guardians of the Galaxy, and Rocket Raccoon is the focus of the latest release. His story is kind of a sad one and illustrates how much of a survivor the scrappy character is. Bonus: the video shows how Rocket meets Groot. [Nerdist]
