TV-CAP: George R.R. Martin Wants to Bring DUNK AND EGG to HBO

It’s Wednesday, and it’s time for another installment of TV-Cap, you’re daily dose of television news. To get you through your hump day, we’ve got George R.R. Martin‘s thoughts on a potential Game of Thrones spinoff for HBO, the possible return of a great Breaking Bad villain, another new Netflix original series, a classic Batman character coming to Gotham, and early details on Dan Harmon‘s next show.

Today’s TV-Cap starts now!

Make Way For The Hedge Knight. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have recently said that they aren’t even considering a spinoff series while they focus on bringing their story to a close. But that doesn’t mean that George R.R. Martin isn’t thinking about it! While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Martin suggested that HBO should consider adapting the Tales of Dunk and Egg, the main characters of The Hedge Knight and two other novellas that he wrote, which are set 90 years before the events of his A Song of Ice and Fire novels.

“A whole world full of stories, waiting to be told… if indeed HBO is interested,” said Martin. “The most natural follow-up would be an adaptation of my Dunk and Egg stories…Each of the novellas could easily be done as a two-hour stand-alone movie for television; that would probably be the ideal way to do them, rather than as an ongoing weekly series.”

Martin has often said that he will write more Dunk and Egg novellas, but he’s got to finish The Winds of Winter first.

The Chicken Man Cometh. There are spoilers ahead for the second season finale of Better Call Saul. You’ve been warned! Series co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould admitted during an interview with Hitfix that the season’s titles contained an anagram for “Fring’s Back,” which refers to Giancarlo Esposito‘s iconic Breaking Bad villain, Gus Fring.

And while the note on Mike’s car appeared to be from Gus (or from someone working for him), Gilligan and Gould indicated that we still may not see Gus for a while and that Esposito isn’t currently signed to reprise his role. “People should not assume in any way, shape, or form that they’ll see Gus in the first episode of next season,” said Gilligan. “Gus is a character, as we know from Breaking Bad, who casts a very long shadow, and has a great many agents doing his bidding…He is not a guy who reveals himself very quickly.”

Time Travelogue. It seems like Netflix gets a new original series lined up every day. Yesterday, the series in question was Travelers, a new time travel drama from Brad Wright, the creator of the Stargate SG-1 TV franchise. The Hollywood Reporte reported that Eric McCormack is set to star in Travelers as the leader of a cell of operatives from the future who inhabit the bodies of people in the present while working together to ensure that their timeline never happens. Travelers will be a co-production with Canada’s Showcase network.

Azrael Rises. Remember when James Gordon shot and killed Theo Galavan earlier this season on Gotham? Well, he ain’t dead any more! As of last Monday, Galavan is back among the living and he will take up the mantle of Azrael in next week’s episode. For all of you non-comic book fans out there, different versions of Azrael have been both villains and allies to Batman.

Fox has released an extended movie style trailer for Azrael’s in-costume debut on Gotham, found over at ComingSoon, which also serves as an effective recap of the season to date.

FX Rides a Crazy Train To Harmontown. Deadline reports that Community creator Dan Harmon is producing Happy City, a comedy in development at FX that has been described as “Thomas The Tank Engine for adults.” The comedy group Extremely Decent created Happy City, which will follow vehicles with human faces and personalities like Taxi Tyler and his friends (a firetruck and a helicopter) as they deal with millennial issues. This project sounds pretty insane, but Harmon has always been our kind of crazy.

That’s a wrap for today’s TV-Cap! Let us know what you think about today’s stories in the comment section below!
