How many times have I commented on the sheer number of comic book-related series on television? I’ve lost count. I’m going to do it again though because I’m amused that two pieces of recent TV news focus on spinoffs of already airing comic book shows. There’s the Arrow and The Flash spinoff, the rumored Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, and you could even argue that Agent Carter was in some ways, a spinoff. We’re spoiled, friends, absolutely spoiled. Keep reading to learn about all the spinoffs, Netflix’s Full House reunion, Mitch Pileggi’s return to The X-Files, and much more.
There’s a Heart. Every show ever seems to comes back around, and the latest example is Full House. John Stamos stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and broke the news that Netflix has picked up a 13-episode sequel series. Fuller House starts as a reunion, but then focuses on D.J. Tanner (Candace Cameron Bure) who is recently widowed and pregnant. She has her friends and family though, and her sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), her friend Kimmy (Andrea Barber) and Kimmy’s daughter move in to help D.J. raise her already born two sons and the upcoming baby. Whew. That’s something else. Stamos will appear as a guest star and produce the series, while talks with other stars from Full House are happening. The sequel will be out in 2016. [Variety]
Mockingbird and Hunter. The rumored Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff is still a rumor, but we have an update on the possible stars. It’s looking like Adrianne Palicki, Nick Blood–Bobbi Morse (Mockingbird) and Lance Hunter, respectively–are ahead of the pack for the lead roles in the series. Given that they’re on opposing sides of the S.H.I.E.L.D. war right now, that seems like an unlikely pairing, but maybe it will be a prequel? So much Marvel, so little time. [Nerdist]
Is This the Title? The Flash and Arrow spinoff needs a title in the worst way, because saying The Flash and Arrow spinoff over and over gets tiring. The CW hasn’t announced anything official, but John Wesley Shipp may have dropped the title at Cape Comic Con. While answering fan questions, he referred to the spinoff as “Legends.” Maybe that’s a working title, maybe it’s the actual title–hard to say, but I will say that it certainly fits. [ComicsAlliance]
Walter Skinner Returns! Dear X-Files fans: You already have a lot to celebrate, but here’s one more thing: Walter Skinner! Mitch Pileggi took to Twitter to confirm that he’s returning as Skinner for the upcoming X-Files reboot. Though he started out on the opposing side, Skinner became an ally–a grumpy ally, but still a worthy one. [Nerdist]
The World of Demon Hunting. The realm of the supernatural is a constantly expanding one in film and television, and ABC is adding another world to the list with their straight-to-series adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments called Shadowhunters. They’ve just cast the first lead: Dominic Sherwood will play Jace, an expert Shadowhunter who will probably show the series star Clary the ropes of demon hunting. [Deadline]
Valar Morghulis. Did any other readers of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire flip right out when they saw the doors to the House of Black and White on this week’s Game of Thrones? Because, whoa! It’s a huge moment from the books, and even if you’re not in the know when it comes to the source material, Arya’s arrival to Braavos was full of importance. And because it’s Game of Thrones, it was far from the only big event in the episode. Read Alicia’s full recap.
On the Regular. When Empire returns for Season 2, it will do so with at least a couple of new series regulars. Yes, Cookie’s assistants are moving on up. Ta’Rhonda Jones (Porsha) and Gabourey Sidibe (Becky) have been promoted. I hope this means they get to give Cookie a harder time. [TVLine]
Desperate Times. So it’s come to this. Director Coulson is having serious troubles with the other faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. right now. So serious that he’s turning to Grant Ward for assistance. The above clip from tonight’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., “The Frenemy of My Enemy” (I’m not making the title up), shows Coulson’s encountering Agent 33 for the first time and reaching out to Ward. [CBR]
