Trying To Find the Twist in M. Night Shyamalan’s New SPLIT Trailer

It’s still unclear what sort of twists and turns M. Night Shyamalan has in store for us with his upcoming film Split, but the latest trailer has certainly piqued our interests. What we know so far about the film is that Split is a psychological thriller that delves deep into the phenomenon of dissociative identity disorders. James McAvoy plays “Kevin,” a man with 23 different personalities.

If you’re anything like us, you’re likely wondering where the Shyamalan-ian twists come in. Both trailers for the film have introduced a few of McAvoy’s characters, applying a few jump-scare moments for the benefit of the supposed big baddie of the film, “The Beast.” We’re guessing that any possible twists probably revolve around that particular character but we’re still foggy on whether or not we’re going to get regular everyday insanity or something alien or otherworldly. With Shyamalan, you just never know.

The official website for the film stays fairly nebulous on the subject, stating, “While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.”

Going on that information, it seems like we may see a fairly straightforward plot, but there are a few, let’s say, super-powered concerns in the latest footage that have us believing there’s more to this film than meets the eye. It’s mentioned that people with Kevin’s condition can “change their body chemistry with their thoughts” as we’re shown a few feats of super-human level strength like forcing a bolted door open and pulling cell bars apart. Is this all a physical change unlocking the raw power of the human body or is McAvoy’s Kevin battling some literal internal demons? Best guess at this point might be “real demons” based on the spidery way he chooses to smash these hallway lights.

Even if Split ends up being another Shyamalan miss (or if plants are even slightly involved, so help us!) we, at the very least, know from just these first two trailers that McAvoy‘s performance will be absolutely compelling.

What are your thoughts on the movie thus far? Are we dealing with body chemistry? Aliens? Monsters? Whatever the hell that Lady in the Water Narf crap was? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
