Trailer: THE ROVER Promises Brooding, Violence, and Killer Accents

Just as Guy Ritchie-style London crime dramas were the toast of the town in the late ’90s/early ’00s, the Australian outback is the new gritty canvas against which audiences are clamoring to see harrowing tales of lawbreaking and vengeance come to life. The first trailer for David Michôd’s The Rover offers all of the above in spades, painting a bleak but compelling picture of the aftermath of a carjacking.

When a car theft goes awry in the Australian boonies, a loner named Eric (Guy Pearce) coerces one of the wounded bandits (Robert Pattinson) to help him track down the thieves across the countryside. Given the brutal majesty of Michôd’s Australian underworld epic Animal Kingdom, it seems like a safe bet that The Rover will deliver the same caliber of tense, sweeping drama that we’ve come to expect from the director:
