Trailer for INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE Invades Internet

It’s been 20 years since those unnamed aliens from whatever-the-hell planet they were from sent massive saucers down to Earth and blew up landmarks on the days leading up to July the 4th. “Welcome to Earth,” said an angry Will Smith who had to miss a barbecue to fly a fighter jet at the alien fighters, but in all that time, and even though most of the world’s major cities were totally hosed despite the victory, Independence Day had yet to be repeated, despite being a massive box office hit. But in 2016, it’s all happening again, and the first trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence tells us the bad E.T.s did not go quietly into the night either.

Looks pretty frightening, or at least it has the potential to be. The first film rode the line between scary alien movie and hokey action flick, falling hard on the latter side at the end of the movie. Just like all good disaster movies with enormous casts, there will be people from all walks of life affected by the aliens. Although, did you see the size of that new ship? It’d probably kill more people crashing than it would shooting its primary weapon.

Director Roland Emmerich made a name for himself in the years following the first ID4 by making disaster movies of all shapes and sizes, but the draw to return to F-18s shooting down massive spacecraft proved perhaps far too much for him to resist. And he’s not the only one to come back. A surprising number of the original cast have returned, most notably Jeff Goldblum‘s David Levinson, the man who deciphered the alien code in the first place. Joining him are former President Whitmore (Bill Pullman), David’s father Julius Levinson (Judd Hirsch), and stripper-turned-scientist by the looks of it Jasmine (Vivica A. Fox).

Remember Jasmine’s son Dylan and the President’s daughter Patty? Well they’re back too, now grown up and played by different actors, Jesse Usher and Maika Monroe, respectively. And, because why not, go-to young action star Liam Hemsworth joins the fray as well, and apparently goes with Goldblum up to the moon. So that’s fun.
