Track of the Day: Deerhunter Shares Hazy Video for Their First Ever Duet, ‘Breaker’

Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox and Lockett Pundt have both provided lead vocals on their band’s songs in the past, but they’ve never done it simultaneously… until now. Today, the group released a video for “Breaker”, which features the band’s first ever duet, and the duo’s voices are a perfect blend that makes too much sense to have not happened before now. Check out the video above.

Guitarist and back-up (as well as occasional lead) vocalist Pundt has made his influence clear on Deerhunter, whose songs are primarily written only by Cox. Deerhunter songs that are more melodic, reverb-drenched, midtempo and feature light, chimey guitars are usually the ones that had more creative input from Pundt, and such is the case with “Breaker”, although Pundt doesn’t appear to have received a writing credit.

Regardless, the song, and its hazy video, is blissful, atmospheric joy that is substantially different from the band’s other recent song, “Snakeskin”. Both tunes are great in their own right, meaning we might have a terrifically diverse Deerhunter album on our hands with the upcoming Fading Frontier.

While we have you: Pundt makes music aside from Deerhunter under the name Lotus Plaza, and if you’re into “Breaker”, then Pundt’s solo material will be ideal for you. His most recent album, 2012’s Action At A Distance, is full of spacey-but-driving indie rock that make it clear where Deerhunter songs like “Desire Lines” came from.
