TOY STORY Gets Its Own Honest Trailer

Pixar’s Inside Out is hitting theaters this week, so it’s fitting that the Honest Trailers team have selected Toy Story as the latest movie to get the HT treatment.

Toy Story was Pixar’s very first feature length film and it kicked off the 3D Animation renaissance and led to 12 great Pixar movies. We’re just going to pretend that the two Cars films never happened.

But as the Honest Trailers team is fond of pointing out, no movie is perfect. Even Toy Story has its faults, and it had the unintentional side effect of decimating the world of 2D animation and costing several animators their jobs because they couldn’t adapt to the new world.

On a more basic level, the Toy Story Honest Trailer reminds us what a huge dick Woody was for most of the movie, as he nearly gets Buzz Lightyear killed just for the crime of being Andy’s new favorite toy. Then there’s the problem with Sid, who is only a monster if he knew that his toy victims were alive. Since Sid clearly didn’t know, did he deserve the psychological trauma he received from the toy uprising?

Other uncomfortable questions pop up as well, notably about the fate of Andy’s dad. As the Honest Trailer points out, Andy’s dad couldn’t have been out of the picture for very long, given the presence of Andy’s much younger sister. When you stop to focus on them, these are the kind of thoughts that make Toy Story a less joyful experience.

To lighten things up, veteran comedian and former MADtv star Will Sasso reprises his role as Randy Newman in this video, as he plays us out with his take on Newman’s signature Pixar songs.

Nerdist readers, what are your answers to the questions posed by the Toy Story Honest Trailer? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
