Japan may have water cake and sliced chocolate, but Korea has stolen my dessert-loving heart. Korea’s soft serve ice-cream of choice â made from organic milk â may be one thing, but the real magic is how they top it off with a sweet, irresistible fluff of cotton candy. Ah, sweet dreams.
Now this magical dessert has made its way stateside with the opening of CottonHi in the heart of Los Angelesâ Koreatown, where they up soft serve, parfaits, and drinks â all topped with a fluffy hat of pure sugary heaven.
The standout on the menu is the original Hi CottonHi which is true milk soft serve in vanilla or chocolate, served with a fluffy hat of flavorful, 100% organic cotton candy. Daily flavors include Strawberry, Lemonade, Double Mint, Chocolate, Salted Caramel, and Coffee. I tasted each of the flavors â for science obviously! â and each had a distinctive taste that disappeared like sugary clouds in my mouth. As if that’s not enough sugar, the cotton candy comes studded with Lucky Charm-like marshmallows (sans the cereal, of course).
There are also a variety of parfaits on the menu, made with everything from brownies and fresh fruit, to caramel corn and more. A topping of cotton candy on those is an extra charge, and although all the desserts are served in small 6 ounce cups, the extra cotton candy did seem unnecessary there.
But how can drinks come with cotton candy? At CottonHi they’re served in a cup with a straw as drinks normally do, but with a packed handful of cotton candy right on top of the lid. Nothing like a cotton candy chaser for the road. Again, should you be concerned that you still haven’t had enough sugar, CottonHi thoughtfully offers up a side of Pop Rocks for an extra charge. Problem solved.
CottonHi happens to be located between one of LA’s most popular AYCE Korean BBQ, Hae Jang Chon and Kyochan, a deliciously crave-worthy Korean fried chicken joint. It’s the perfect dessert after a meal of savory food: a pile of cotton candied dessert hits the spot just right.
