If you’re like me, you have sat in a dark theater at a monthly screening series and watched Tommy Wiseau’s bizarre cult classic The Room… multiple times. Why not? It’s a fan favorite. One of those “so bad it’s good” type deals. But what’s this elusive director up to now, you say?
Well, Wiseau has his eyeballs on a major franchise. Literally. He wants to direct the sequel to Fantastic Four, and told Milwaukee Magazine that he’s “ready for a big project in Hollywood… so if they give me a project, $200 million man, we’ll make a movie!” Gosh, I just… don’t know what to say.
How? Why? Apparently Wiseau was disappointed that Fox didn’t reach out to him about the first film, which was directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle) and received negative reviews. Wiseau said in his interview, “You know, I told you I saw this Fantastic Four… it just… I’m not being critical – let me put it this way: I like it, I did enjoy it number one. Number two, it’s too bad they didn’t call me, that’s all I want to say and I rest my case (laughs). That’s all I can tell you (laughs).” This disjointed way of talking is emblematic of Wiseau’s filmmaking, which features a far looser structure than Hollywood filmmaking is known for.
I’m trying really hard to imagine what Fantastic Four 2 would be like if it was directed by Wiseau (and starred him too?). It would definitely be unintentionally hilarious, random, and deeply awkward, that’s for sure. Should we take a look at the trailer for The Room? I think that’s a resounding yes.
