This week, Tom Cruise will return to theaters in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. And while the title character of Jack Reacher isn’t the type to run away from a fight, it almost wouldn’t be a Tom Cruise movie if he didn’t take off running at some point. Through nearly three-and-a-half decades in film, running has become Cruise’s signature cinema move. Now, a new video has spliced together all of Cruse’s runs into a nearly 20 minute supercut.
Burger Fiction is behind the “Every Tom Cruise Run. Ever.” supercut, which starts in 1981 with his theatrical debut in Endless Love and goes all the way through 2015 with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. As you might expect, Cruise gets quite a workout in the four Mission: Impossible films that have been released to date. It’s almost as if he’s in some kind of “Danger Zone.” As it turns out, Cruise didn’t have any running scenes in Top Gun, which was one of his signature movies of the ’80s.
It’s interesting to note that in Cruise’s earliest films, he’s running for pretty normal reasons. He’s playing soccer in Endless Love, rushing to be on time in Risky Business, as well as carrying a football and chasing a girl in All the Right Moves. But as Cruise’s movies veered into action and suspense, he was often running for his life. One of his most impressive sustained runs comes from The Firm, as Cruise’s character ran in and out of traffic to get away from his malevolent employers. That was one of the movies where he didn’t actually play an action hero, which is why The Firm‘s scenes carried a greater sense of danger.
Remember Collateral? That film had one of Cruise’s few turns as a villain, and he got to do the bad guy run while chasing down Jaime Foxx. Other notable runs occurred in Mission: Impossible III and War of the Worlds. Next year, Cruise will be starring in a big budget remake of Universal’s The Mummy. Somehow, we suspect he’ll be running in that film as well.
