Tom Cruise Reveals Plans for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 6

Tom Cruise has chosen to accept his assignment, and that means Mission: Impossible 6 is already in the works!

Cruise made the revelation during an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where Cruise was promoting Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, the fifth movie in the Mission: Impossible franchise.

“We’re starting to work on [the sixth movie] now,” said Cruise. “We’ll probably start shooting it next summer.” Cruise also told Stewart that he’s spoken with Christopher McQuarrie about a potential sequel to Edge of Tomorrow.

It’s possible that Cruise may have jumped the gun here, as Paramount has not officially confirmed Cruise’s announcement of the sixth Mission: Impossible movie. But if it is happening, this marks a departure for the franchise. Each sequel had previously been released four to five years apart. Of course, since Cruise is 53 now, he probably doesn’t want to wait until he’s 57 to start shooting the next one.

The Mission: Impossible films are based on the TV series of the same name that ran during the ‘60s. Cruise originated the role of Ethan Hunt in the first Mission: Impossible film in 1996 under director Brian DePalma. For Mission: Impossible 2, Cruise teamed up with director John Woo in 2000, and he returned in 2006 for Mission: Impossible 3 with J.J. Abrams, who made his feature film directorial debut with that movie. 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was the biggest hit in the series, with Cruise and director Brad Bird, who also made his live-action directorial debut in the franchise.

McQuarrie co-wrote and directed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which hits theaters on Friday, July 31.
