This RED ALERT 2 VR Proof of Concept Is Unreal

With VR headsets finally on consumers’ heads, players all over the world are experiencing video games in a brand new way. While some of the best features so far have come in the form of new games, it’s always a delight when folks manage to bring a classic to the various headsets, and that’s exactly what happened when someone recreated Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 in Unreal Engine 4. The cherry on top, however, was that they got the game running on the HTC Vive. Check out the video at the top of the page to see it in action.

The experience comes courtesy of Unreal Engine 4 Developer Adam Horvath, who recently posted the VR video above. Seeing the iconic real time strategy (RTS) brought to life in VR  is enough to make any Command & Conquer fan squeal with delight. While players don’t get an experience that is on par with something like Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, or EVE: Valkyrie, seeing an RTS in this format is thrilling. It also makes us really want the game to get an official release.

A modder known as Slye_Fox is responsible for converting the 2D models of the original into 3D; it’s a change that not only alters the aesthetic, but gives players a brand new perspective of the map. Being able to move around  using the headset and two HTC Vive controllers makes for a more immersive experience, reminiscent of a tabletop game.

While an official VR-compatible version of the game probably isn’t in the cards, the experiment is a perfect demonstration of how a game in that genre would look and work on one of the high tech headsets.

What did you think of the proof of concept video? Would you want to play a VR Command and Conquer game? Let us know in the comments!
