This Is Not Our Shiz: KEY & PEELE Ending Its Comedy Central Run

People hoping to see more of President Obama’s anger translator, A.A.Ron Balakay, and the two valets for whom Liam Neesons is their s*** after the current season will be sadly and sorely disappointed. The Wrap has learned in an exclusive from series co-star and co-creator Keegan-Michael Key that this current season of the Emmy-nominated sketch comedy phenomenon Key & Peele will be the last.

“This is our final season – and it’s not because of Comedy Central, it’s us,” said Key. “It was just time for us to explore other things, together and apart. I compare it to Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. We might make a movie and then do our own thing for three years and then come back and do another movie.”

Key & Peele is in its fifth season on Comedy Central which will finish up in September. The ending of the series has apparently been known to its creators for awhile but they kept it quiet until now. It’s already been awarded the Peabody Award due to its challenging and humorous tackling of racial issues, and earlier this month it received seven Emmy nominations to go with the three it got in 2014 and the one in 2013.

So what were these “other things” Key was talking about? Well, they’ll be shooting the new film Keanu in the coming months, which was co-written by Peele, then Key will go star in a movie in New York while Peele directs a horror film he wrote. But them writing together is what we like the most! Luckily, this isn’t the end of that either.

“There will be Key & Peele productions coming up,” he said. “We’re doing the reboot of Police Academy, and there’s a TV show in the works that me might do for Comedy Central. There’s lots of stuff we have cooking up.”

While sad, we can sort of understand why they’d want to go out on top. The show has never been a massive hit on cable, but their reach on the internet is enormous, garnering millions upon millions of views each time a sketch made it online.
