For any of you out there with epic plans to get the titles of the three The Hobbit movie titles tattooed on your chest, please note that there has been a name change for the third film, previously titled There and Back Again.
In a Facebook post, director Peter Jackson revealed that the final film in the trilogy will be called The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, dropping the allusion to Bilbo’s in-story book about his adventures with the Dwarves.
Jackson explains the name change: “We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate. And so: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies it is.”
Despite the name change, it’s still got the same pre-Christmas release date: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will be in theaters December 17th.
It’s amazing how all these negative opinions come from people with nothing constructive to add, nor anything to do with the movie at all…CHILLAX People, it”ll be fine.
Hey Peter let’s throw some more “The’s” in the title.
I personally don’t welcome the change at all. “The battle of 5 armies” sounds like 5 kings fighting for a throne, aka Game of Thrones. They should have stuck with the original name I cant picture anyone going to see solely based on name chance, so why change it? Just cause something “feels” or “sounds” appropriate, doesnt mean it it.

I don’t know whether I am terrified or excited for this… It would surely be fantastic to see the battle… but then again, the deaths…
Maybe Jackson is saving “There And Back Again” for the 2-hour edit that combines all three movies into a single film. And if he doesn’t, then someone needs to make a Phantom edit under that title.

Way better than the rumored title of “Into the Fire”. 😉 Say what you will, I thoroughly enjoyed “The Desolation of Smaug” and the extra time with the characters in that film made re-watching “And Unexpected Journey” quite a bit better. These films have never tried to be another Lord of the Rings, they’re entirely their own series with a similar backdrop, hell, the books themselves were so drastically different! But to those nerds with their panties in a bunch: something tells me this next one will come as close to LOTR as we’ll ever see again. Epic Battles! Dark Days! Drama and the death of a lead character! And Smaug in action?! Oh man! Some of the best CGI I’ve ever seen put down on film!
“There and Back Again” was too whimsical. For the overblown movie, not for the book.

Man, I enjoy having all this new Middle Earth material but sometimes I do kinda miss hobbits!
Agreed with Gene, I think this is exclusively to save “There & Back Again” for the title of a) a boxed set, b) the entire trilogy cut into one long, 9 hour continuous feature, or c) the extremely unlikely recut of the trilogy down to one 3 hour film as it should have been to start. Boxed set is the obvious.
I see no problem with this.The battle of five armies was a big part of the latter half of the book. It seems more appropriate than There and Back Again, in my opinion, because that title implies that the focus of the movie is on the journey home.

That same Facebook post mentions that they think “There and Back Again” would be an appropriate subtitle for a box set, so we may still see it used in that context.
I don’t know why, but for a second, I thought they meant the main title ‘The Hobbit’ and, to tell you, I was confused for a second. But I think I like it.
Pretty sure he’s only switching it up after all the flack for The Hobbit not having the same level of action as LotR had. The new name definitely sounds like it would it involve more battle scenes than the sweet, sweeping adventure “There and Back Again” seems to promise. Was I bummed that he changed it as a fan? Yeah, but ultimately if it gets butts in seats, that’s what counts, right?
P.J. has destroyed any chance of holding true to the story…so no surprise with this…
As a nerd on the internet, I instinctively fear and revile change. Therefore I will rant and rail about this update, at great length.
