“Welcome to After Earth!” with Will and Jaden Smith

Will Smith’s turn in the post-apocalyptic I Am Legend was damn impressive, and director M. Night Shyamalan still gets the benefit of the doubt since he created The Sixth Sense (and the more controversial but still solid Unbreakable). So to see these two come together on a space epic where Earth is now the foreign soil is certainly intriguing. The movie had a toe-dip presence at Comic-Con this past year, but this is the first full look we’ve had at the film.

The official synopsis reads:

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

Super excited to see this one!! Been a Will Smith fan since I knew who he was and there isn’t one movie that he has been in that I didn’t love… Jaden is a talented kid and I really want to see what he does in such an adult role next to his father’s dynamic presence. I rarely go to the movies, but I’m waiting for this one… Midnight release? I see it in future.

  2. Debora Hanna Mussie says:

  5. I’m all about giving people another chance. If you never fail then how can you learn and grow?

I have to admit that it got a bit dusty in the room when I read the summary. I <3 Will Smith and I think his son has potential. This movie deserves a chance!

THANK you! He and that movie do not often get the credit they deserve. I only wish they would have kept the original ending.

  7. Tristan9535 says:

    The Last Airbender… never forget.

  8. Zelim says:

The draw for this movie is simply that Will Smith rarely makes bad choices in deciding to be in a film. As this is #2 to launch his sons career, I can’t imagine there would be any chances taken with the script by Mr. Smith. I expect an enjoyable summer movie; I don’t expect it to be smart or deep; but I think it will likely be enjoyable action fluff.

  9. Brian Walton says:

Did anyone else think, that because Will Smith says the line, everything on this planet evolved to kill humans, this could be a sequel to the Happening?

  10. Adam says:

Indeed. I may go see this because of Will Smith, Shyamalan certainly isn’t a draw anymore.

  11. Paula says:

I have always enjoyed Will Smith and his movies. This one is extra special as it was filemed in my home county.

  12. David Zaine Aarons says:

Shyamalan gets no benefit of the doubt from me. He hasn’t made a remotely good movie since Unbreakable.

  13. Sonja says:

I saw The Happening and enjoyed it. Interesting film and I agree with Roger Ebert that it’s underrated. I enjoyed the theme of Earth’s flora evolving pollen as a weapon against the overpopulation of humans. So I see that After Earth is that same them on steroids. I’m intrigued.

I understand why some people are wary of M. Night Shyamalan’s movies but he is talented as perhaps this will be a solid effort.

  14. Tom Steele says:

I can’t believe there’s people on this site who would watch any M. Night film for any other reason than a How did this get made podcast.

  15. snqxvxdt says:

What are you talking about? Shyamalan doesn’t get any benefit of the doubt. unbreakable and signs are two flukes among a pattern of annoying films. Look at the last 4 movies he has written and directed. All hilarious.

  16. Nick Bushnell says:

yeeaaaahh, so the twist is in the trailer… what’s the point of the movie

  17. JetpackBlues says:

So, I gotta ask, what’ll be the ‘twist’ to this movie?
