These POKEMON and ZELDA Watercolor Mashups are Perfect

You can turn on your console of choice right now and use Lucario to kick Link square in the head, but aside from the Super Smash Bros. games, there has been very little crossover between Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda, two of Nintendo’s predominant franchises.

In comes David Pilatowsky, a graphic designer from Mexico, to fix that problem, with his series of digital watercolor paintings he created in Photoshop that merge the disparate but related worlds with an artistic and clever combination of characters.

Some of the mashups are as simple as putting the four mascots from the first generation of Pokémon games–Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle–in different-colored Link costumes, while others take advantage of the character designs and mythologies behind characters from both franchises to create genius amalgamations.

For example, Abra makes for a perfect Happy Mask Salesman, a character who appears in multiple Zelda games. Cubone is an ideal choice to play Zant, a villain from Twilight Princess who, like Cubone, is often masked. Jirachi, the fairy-like “Wish Pokémon,” was the right choice to masquerade as a Great Fairy. Perhaps the most savvy choice of the lot is Ghastly as the Moon from Majora’s Mask–his creepy, wide-eyed smile is appropriately terrifying.

Connections between the franchises aside, it’s Pilatowsky’s artistic ability that truly brings these mash-ups to life. Check out a few of our favorites in the gallery below, and head over here to check out the rest.
