These Illustrations Of Classic Cartoon Characters Are Disturbing AND Amazing

I’m not sure what it is about us geeks, but we just love seeing weird, twisted, somewhat disturbing versions of our favorite childhood cartoon and video game characters. Maybe it’s the effect of all those Tim Burton movies we’ve seen in our lifetimes, or maybe it’s some leftover part of our psyche from early childhood that just finds some of these characters scary.

Now, a French artist who goes by the name of PEZ  has gone and taken several beloved icons of our youth and given them the creepy treatment, all in a series of graphite illustrations which he’s labelled “Distroy” (in the classic Disney font, no less). Poor Walt would be spinning in his grave.

PEZ has “Distroyed” Disney icons like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, Buzz Lightyear (looking like he’s auditioning for the Toy Story version of The Walking Dead) Kenny from South Park, Spongebob, Snoopy, Tweety Bird, Mario from Super Mario Brothers, and maybe the most disturbing in the series, Homer and Bart Simpson. Bart especially looks like something from a bad acid trip Hunter S. Thompson might have had in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Other Matt Groening characters include Krusty the Klown and Bender from Futurama. While most of the illustrations are black and white, some are colored, which somehow actually make them creepier.

You can check out “Distroy” and several other equally amazing pieces at the artist’s portfolio.
