THE X-FILES Gets Novel Origin Stories from Kami Garcia and Jonathan Maberry

The X-Files reboot may have its season finale tonight, but it’s not the end of storytelling for everyone’s favorite conspiracy theory hunters. EW announced this morning that Fox will simultaneously publish two novels in January 2017 that tell the stories of Mulder and Scully as teenagers.

The X-Files origin series is being written by two familiar authors: Kami Garcia and Jonathan Maberry. Garcia is a No. 1 New York Times Bestselling YA co-author of the Beautiful Creatures and Dangerous Creatures novels, and the author of the upcoming The Lovely Reckless. Maberry is likewise a New York Times bestselling thriller and horror novelist, as well as a Bram Stoker Award winner and Marvel Comics writer. You may recognize his name from Marvel Universe vs. The Avengers, among many other titles.

Agent Mulder’s story, written by Garcia, will be titled Agent of Chaos; Agent Scully’s, written by Maberry, will be titled Devil’s Advocate. Everyone involved on the project is very excited to be working within a grander universe they were already excited about. Erin Stein, the project’s publisher at Imprint, told Entertainment Weekly, “As a die-hard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me. Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories.”

The sentiment is shared by Garcia. She told us, “It’s exciting and a huge honor to be able to write an origin story for a character and a series I was a huge fan of growing up. Working with my friend and fellow YA author, Jonathan Mayberry, and my publisher Erin Stein at Imprint is icing on the cake.”

There isn’t a lot of information out there yet on what stories exactly will chronicle, but we do know they will be set in 1979 (when Mulder is 17 and Scully is 15), and that the timing of the novels coincides with a point in time when murder, conspiracy and the occult were featured heavily in the news.

January of 2017 needs to get here as soon as possible! Tell us which story you’re looking forward to more in the comments below.
