The Walking Dead is playing with its audience by showing us the ending of this story just as it is getting into high gear. Did you notice the cane and flowers in that video? That’s from the flash forward of Old Man Rick, years after the events of this war have played out. We can say this because AMC has already spoiled it: Rick Grimes will make it out alive. Whether Rick stays intact remains to be seen, and nearly everyone else’s fate is unclear. A few of the characters have already outlived their comic book counterparts, but their luck won’t last forever.
There is something empowering about seeing the expanded cast finally reunited after they were kept apart for most of the seventh season. Even Dwight is somewhat welcomed into the fold, as he receives a critical warning about when Rick’s group intends to strike.
The Walking Dead season 8 will premiere this Sunday, October 22, on AMC.
